On October 26th of 2009, GeoCities closed its doors and ended an era. This site traces some of its history back to those servers as far back as September 11th of 1997. The world wide web (or "Information Superhighway"), in those days, was a very different place. Most "forums" were actually Usenet newsgroups, search engines were called "web rings," and advertising as we know it was a decade away. Although many ISPs offered file storage services to their users, GeoCities brought with it the metaphors of neighborhoods and communities that helped the personal home page really take off. Thanks for the memories and all you've done to make the world wide web the rich and colorful landscape it is today.
